2009 Season - Week 16
Wait Nearly Over?
The top two in the Premiership both put in Championship winning performances in week 15. At halftime in the final game of the week Chief was just 6 points behind Johnnie as Minnesota had been shut out, so neither Favre (for Chief) nor Peterson & Shiancoe (for Johnnie) had scored. The Vikings then put up 30 second half points with Favre throwing 2 TD passes, which would have put Chief equal top except one went to Shiancoe and Peterson also scored on two one-yard runs. By the time Chicago won in OT Johnnie had put up a Hall of Fame 50 points and an 18 point lead going into the last week of the season. Chief ended up 2 points short of the Hall for the second time in 4 weeks but Johnnie’s visit is his 8th. His highest score was 60 points back in week 15 of 1999. So Johnnie is one nervous week away from winning his first trophy in 13 years. Johnnie has actually put together a very good season and his current score of 539 already ties the 8th highest ever, a total he set when coming runner-up to H in 2008. If he matches his weekly average of 34 points he’d end up with 573 points, one point shy of the second highest total ever, 574 set by Johnnie when he won in 1996 and set by Wayne when he won the Papas Fritas in 2004. Johnnie has no chance of catching the highest season total as H put up a remarkable 670 points 2 years ago.
The Drop Zone
Dave G put up 35 points and moved ahead of Mark but it may be too little to overcome his 5 point disaster from last week. He is still 21 points behind Aaron with Mark a further 5 back. John looks to be down as he is 41 points short of safety. If Dave and/or Mark have a big final week it may not be Aaron who goes down however, as reigning champion Wayne scored just one TD this week and is only 10 points ahead of Junior BUM Jnr.
Promotion Fight
Despite Cheryl only scoring 12 points the positions in the Conference look set. She still has a 43 point lead over Craig despite Craig’s 36 points. Ron outscored George 35-22 but it looks to be too little too late as George has a 42 point lead in their search for promotion.
Tie-Breaker
With everything so close it’s time for a reminder about the Tie Breaking procedure for promotion/relegation spots. If there is a tie the Papas Fritas and Conference Championships would be shared but in order to decide 8th and 9th in the Premiership or 3rd and 4th in the Conference we employ the same system as we use in the post season. That is the Momentum Rule ie the player that scores latest in a game is deemed to have momentum and will beat the person they are tied with. Latest means closest to the final whistle in the game that player is in, not someone scoring in the last game of the season. For example:- the last score a player makes for BUM A comes with 1:55 to go in a 6pm game, the last score a player makes for BUM B comes with 8:47 to go in the Sunday Night game, BUM A wins.
